On the outskirts of Austin, Texas, you’ll find a FarmHer who will change your perspective. Heidi Sloan is not only compassionate about the homeless population in her city, but she is working with a group of passionate people who are acting on the issues and creating change.
Heidi works at Genesis Gardens and Community First! Village, which started in the late 1990’s. The program has grown from delivering meals from the back of a minivan to a community of small homes centered around acres of gardens. The community homes are occupied by some of the chronically homeless of Austin; people who are ready to get back on their feet.
Heidi can be found working with a large group of volunteers to get them tying up tomato plants, putting in new stakes, planting, weeding, and other daily chores. The produce grown in the garden is harvested weekly and given as a free-will offering to the community members in exchange for their help. Heidi is a FarmHer who, through the simple tasks of growing food in a garden or milking goats, is impacting people and changing lives…one tomato at a time.
