Meet Marissa, a young lady with a big smile and green thumb. Marissa was born with Down Syndrome but has been involved with more activities and extracurriculars than most 22-year-olds. Marissa is currently the boss at Straw Hat Farms, where she and her family offer a variety of produce and flowers that they grow in their garden beds and greenhouse.

Marissa first got started in horticulture through FFA involvement. Then one day, Marissa’s mom looked out the window at a lot across the street and mentioned that it would make a great place for a greenhouse. Just over four years and two expansions later, the family runs Straw Hat Farms and provides produce and beautiful flowers for their community.
Throughout the day, I kept seeing signs of the love and care that the Schletzbaums have for everything they do. Roger and Maureen, Marissa’s parents, saw that their daughter needed an opportunity to make an impact in her community, so they helped her create one just as unique as she is..
