Snow Preparedness

You might say the residents of Aroostook County, Maine are always ready for snow. Aroostook is the northernmost county east of the Great Lakes, as well as the largest—it’s as big as Connecticut and Rhode Island combined.

And it’s one of the snowiest places in America. Caribou, a town in The County—many Maine residents simply refer to Aroostook as “The County”—is among the top ten cities in the U.S. in average snowfall, at 116” a year; two winters ago, 197.8” of the white stuff piled up.

Capturing the Beauty of Fall

All it takes is a few evenings in the mid-50s, and the hint of fall is in the air. While each season has its own aura of beauty, I think fall is the most colorful. For that reason, outdoor fall decorating is only limited to the decorator’s eye and the detail and time one is willing to put into the project.

With plantings now mature and heading toward completion, the color opportunities are almost endless. It really comes down to where you want to decorate.

Fall Foliage on the Great Rivers Scenic Byway

It’s the most scenic drive in the Midwest. Take in the beautiful fall foliage driving alongside the Mississippi River on the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway. Here, the Missouri, Mississippi and Illinois Rivers meet to form a 35,000- acre floodplain. The Mississippi, a working river, is also an environmental treasure. Historic 18th Century river towns, islands, bars, points and bends create beautiful scenery beneath limestone bluffs that are covered by forests extending over nearly 20,000 acres.

Horse Breeds

Does breed make a difference? It all depends on what you want to do with your horse. We’ll list a few breeds here and give a brief description of their general traits. This will help to narrow your selection. You must remember that in any breed you will have very docile and gentle creatures at one of the spectrum, and you’ll find fiery, irascible, and cantankerous animals at the other end. Remember, horses have a personality just as you and I do!

Tomatoe Varieties

There are many varieties of tomatoes available to the home gardener, and this is one area
where it is really fun to experiment every year. The Heirloom varieties that are becoming
more available to us has made limiting what I decide to plant every year a very difficult
decision indeed. I’ve been very fortunate to have a neighbor who is even more of a tomato
nut than I am. Marie plants dozens of tomato plants early every spring, and because she
always has a surplus, I’ve enjoyed varieties of tomatoes I didn’t even know existed! While it

Sandhill Landscape

The Nebraska Sandhills is one of the most unique areas in the world. Spanning almost 20,000 square miles (one-fourth the area of Nebraska), it is the largest sand dune formation in the Western Hemisphere. Following the last ice age, wind took hold of the loose sand, blowing it into vast dunes reaching up to nearly 400 feet in height and stretching 20 miles across the landscape. Precipitation allowed grassland plants to take root in the shifting sand, eventually stabilizing the dunes and holding them in place.
