Cherry thumbprint cookies

Sometimes it’s important to step up and make your mark for the holidays. When you make these cherry thumbprint cookies, your family—and grandchildren—will remember these delicious treats for years, if not generations.

These cookies are easy, traditional, and ready to bring smiles to all who try them. You’ll wonder why they weren’t already part of your holiday repertoire.

Cherry Thumbprint Cookies

Ingredients:

1 cup softened butter

1/2 cup sugar

2 cup flour

cherry pie filling (raspberry jam is also good)

1 cup powdered sugar

1-2 tsp whole milk

a dash or two of lemon juice

1/2 tsp. of vanilla

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350° F.
  • Cream the butter and sugar together.
  • Mix in flour (the dough will look crumbly).
  • Roll dough into 1-1/4″ round balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart.
  • Press down with your thumb and make thumbprint indentations in each dough ball.
  • Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the edges are slightly golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and press down onto each indentation again.
  • Cool on the cookies for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Fill each thumbprint indentation with a few cherries from the pie filling.
  • Mix the powdered sugar with milk, lemon juice, and vanilla to make the icing.
  • Pour the icing into a ziplock bag. With scissors, snip off a tiny hole in one corner to squeeze icing out and drizzle on top of the cookies
  • Drizzle icing in lines across each cookie to decorate.
